Pullet, you’ll be a Hen Soon

They did it! They laid eggs! We have Hens now!

Monday morning things were happening in the coop. Prudence was mumbling to herself alot and spending alot more time on housekeeping at the bottom of the Henhouse than usual (which is to say never before). She was scratching out all the straw in the corner, UNDER the eggbox, rather than in the eggbox, but whatever. We got kind of excited, this seemed to be the behaviour that our chicken book said to watch for before the first egg…

And about a half hour later we looked in to see Pru standing over a perfect, blue, TINY egg! She didn’t seem to know what to do with it, and didn’t mind when I took it away from her. Its so cute, about half the size they are normally. Again according to our book, its normal for the first few eggs to be undersized, or strangely shaped. Its the chickens body getting used to making this crazy new thing. I mean eggs! Those are weird!

Later on in the day we noticed Henrietta spending alot of time in the eggbox. Then we saw three of the four crazy chickens roosting on top of the henhouse, but no Henri. I decided to investigate, cause no chicken of ours normally likes to be left out of a good henhouse roof roost. Sure enough, she was laying in the eggbox and when I reached under her I found a tiny brown egg! It seems that Henri is a brooder, which means that she (if we had a rooster) would be a great chick mom cause she actually sits on her eggs after laying them, rather than wandering off to do something else (Like Pru). But to bad for her, I stole her egg.

Heres some current pictures of the girls, close-up so you can check out those awesome head adornments that they are growing:

Heres Martha:
And Henrietta, sideways cause of the weirdness of the blogspot:

And Prudence:

And Iesha:

And heres the eggs! On the left I placed normal sized chicken eggs, the blue one is from a friend’s chicken, and on the right are my eggs:

I found another egg this morning, but it had been crushed by the girls while they all slept on it last night. I don’t know who laid it, but Martha was acting weird this morning, so maybe she will be next!

We haven’t eaten the eggs yet, I’m not sure if its cause they are tiny that the idea is unappetizing or if it’s cause they are from our chickens! I think its cause they are the first eggs, and not because I personally know the chickens who laid them. I mean, when you read that the eggs are misshapen when first laid that doesn’t exactly scream “you want to eat these eggs,” ya know?

I’ll keep you all posted as to when we do eat the first eggs.
