you’d think i could post regularly

But apparently I really can’t, not even when its something I’m super excited about, like my loft room! Here’s an update sans pictures, the camera with said pictures is currently residing at Brandon’s studio.

I got alot of little things done last week, but the biggest was the electrical work. Which I did, all by myself (okay, there was a book with drawings that I kinda followed)! I wired in two electrical outlets, a light switch, and the light that goes with the switch! It took me about three hours or so to do, most of which I was terrified that I would make a mistake and somehow burn my house down. When I finally hooked my new wiring into the existing wiring (that me and dad did two years ago to run the air conditioner) I was just crossing my fingers that nothing would explode. And then, when nothing did, i crossed my toes that the light would turn on, and the plugs work. And they did. Electricity is an amazing thing.

So after I finished that my loft really felt finished. There weren’t any more extension cords snaking through the door to the attic, in fact, i was so energized about that that I finished off the door to the attic, which pretty much means i hung the door in the doorway, rather than letting it just sit there propped up. I also put on these cute little vintage cabinet door pulls, a lime green one in the loft, a metal one in the attic side. And a magnetic closer to hold it shut (and it worked! picture me giddy, cause I was).

I’ve got art up, including the most fantastic cross-stitch my mother made for me years, ago. It is about one and a half by two feet in size, and it is a picture of a curio cabinet full of “calico” cat figurines. They are covered in “calico” prints, not spots, but little flowers and stripes. This thing is amazing, and it took her five years to finish. She started it when I was little and would have LOVED to have it in my room. She finished it when i was in middle school, and well, you know how middleschoolers are. But she framed it anyway (Cause damn, she spent five years on it, and she doesn’t even like cats) and it got hung in my bedroom after I moved out. Well, as i was building my loft I thought about that picture and I thought it would be great up there, the colors would work, and its just weird enough to match. Its perfect. I’d been wanting it for a few years now (she didn’t know that though), I just didn’t have a place for it, and this is perfect. Its hanging right over the left side of the futon, where it can be looked at all the time. And it really should be viewed close up, because all the cats are doing something, and there is like 50 of them, so there is alot to look at.

I’ve also gotten the curtains up, they are cut down from some longer ones my friend Laurie gave me, they are vintage yellow curtains with large magnolia blossoms printed on them. I lined them to block out the light and they work pretty well. So if you stay over some night, don’t worry, the sun won’t wake you early. And I just put up the christmas lights this morning, so there is proper party lighting. I’ve also collected a variety of weird books to poke through so that people up there won’t get bored!

When it cools down a little bit we can turn our attention to the outside of the dormer, which is still just covered in tar paper. We really need to get the roof on, but its just been to hot to try to work with metal roofing in the sun! Hopefully it will happen in a week or so.

And I’m turning 29 on Monday! My last year as a twenty something. I don’t really think I mind. It might be really nice to be thirty. Most of my friends that have tried it say its better than being in your twenties, so I guess I’ll give it a shot. Ya know, in a year. Or so.

Dormer Day One

Today was the day! Finally. I have been excited about this all week. I woke up at six this morning and just got up cause Charlie was coming over at seven thirty and I wanted to be ready. Ya know, I had to get all the farm chores done early: feed the birds, water the veggies, take the dry clothes off the line… It was good that I did that, cause he showed up at seven! He puttered around a bit, we woke Brandon up (who despite my urgings to the contrary, got a little drunk last night and wasn’t his best first thing this morning) and they got to work cutting the hole in the roof right at the same time I took off to set up for the Saturday Market. Here is a picture of the roof before I left:
And here is what they did while I was gone. I got back two hours later, and I brought along pumpkin bread and an air conditioner. Did I mention that its supposed to be about 96 degrees today? That’s why Charlie got here so early. This is Charlie after they cut the hole:
And here is all the crap from that hole, and him cutting a board for something. He says that its his job to make the mess, someone else always cleans it up. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but in this case I cleaned up the mess after he left, that picture is later.
I think Brandon might be holding those two boards up here, I’m not sure cause I wasn’t there. But you get a good idea of how wide the hole is, about six feet. And a lovely view of my attic floor. We lucked out when Charlie cut the hole, we were afraid that the bedroom addition roof might have overlapped the original roof, but it butts in right underneath the original roof, so we didn’t do anything to horrible to the structure. Yay!Theres the boys. I took this picture as Brandon and I were getting ready to finish off the loft floor. See that board sticking up in the middle? That’s the kick-ass knock together wood flooring we got at the Restore for $20 total. Brandon is reaching through what will be our window!Awww, ain’t they cute? The finished frame job looking out from the back of the loft. all this and done right around noon! It got too hot for Charlie at that point and he called it quits for the day. I don’t blame him, although I do wish we had gotten the walls on. But you don’t complain when your kick ass builder friend (who is doing you the awesomest favor ever) wants to be done for the day! Please note, this is after I cleaned up all the debris covering the floor.
And this is whats left over after I organized the mess: five bags of roofing, a pile of burnable wood, a pile of misc 2 by 4′s, and a bag of scrap wood. I guess I could of left the cleanup for another day, but I was on a roll, and while no one had impaled themselves on a nail yet, it really was only a matter of time, so I got rid of them all.
This really is the coolest thing we’ve done to the house so far. I mean, the other stuff is pretty dang cool, but a whole new room? And it feels like a treehouse! It is so awesome. I’m in awe of Charlie, I wish I was as comfortable with tools (and had his tools, that nailgun is rad, and makes building so quick!) and knew all the stuff he knows! He just wandered around on our roof making cuts, measuring things (and having it work the first time), eyeballing things and just all around making it look like the easiest thing ever to build a dormer. He’s currently building his wife a studio in their backyard, and last year he built a beautiful sauna off their garage. He is rad. Okay, enough about Charlie, yay us for thinking this up! And yay for Brandon for going along with it, and being really excited about it today after we got started on it!

Stay tuned for day 2 of the building job: the walls and the roof!
